Let's hang! We spend a lot of time in lifts, on ladders, and on catwalks doing what we do best—hanging lighting and decor for weddings and events. Our crew spends a lot of time discussing and planning this. Who doesn't enjoy brainstorming creative and safe ways to get things in the air?
Let's look at some decor pieces and lighting we've hung recently and how we did it!
Hanging Decor at Dover Hall - Floral "Clouds" & Lighting
This ambitious design was a collaboration with a local florist, Fleuressence Floral Design. Like most designs of this nature, it was the result of several site surveys, dozens of emails, calls, and texts, and a trained event staff. Completing this design requires four rigging pros, two drape pros, two lighting pros, and around ten floral pros. Even with a skilled and coordinated crew, a setup like this can take eight hours to perfect.
Dover Hall has no ceiling rigging points for wedding vendors to use for hanging decor. Instead, we have to bring the support in ourselves! We like to use crank stands to get the equipment in the air. This way, we can build and design on the ground and lift to the desired height. This is safer and fasterand provides more flexibility than a fixed height structure.
The truss crank stands used to fly the truss structure are not visible. Our drape pros erect drapes up to 22' tall to surround the space and cover the crank lift. There are typically four lifts. Technicians crank everything up in unison, requiring careful coordination between techs on each crank lift.
Hanging Decor In Charlottesville - Dancefloor Disco Balls
Disco never died. It's very much alive at Virginia Weddings. For this design, the mirror balls are hung from a series of cables we install inside the tent. The sparkling from thousands of tiny mirrors can be seen anywhere in the tent and outside. This creates an excellent backdrop for pictures and videos, no matter where you are.
Disco doesn't need a tent. We can put mirror balls pretty much anywhere. There is no end to creativity when using mirror balls.
Disco balls are a classic, memorable decor effect with high appeal. They can be combined with greenery or lighting, used in a group, or as a solitary decor piece for a themed party.
Hanging Decor at Maymont - Secret Garden in a Tent
Made of almost 100% silk florals, this design packs a big punch. Some people don't like the way tents look. We know because so many of our clients hire us to completely transform spaces. While this design can be achieved using natural florals, the price difference is considerable.
For this design, we use two crank lifts to raise a truss at the center of the tent. We secure the truss with steel cable and attach pipes. Greenery panels are connected to the rigging system. Lighting fixtures, florals, and greenery vines are added to complete the design.
Hanging Chandeliers From Hooks - Linden Row Inn
Here's a simple way to bring chandeliers to your wedding: chandelier hooks and goosenecks! Hooks sit under the table and fit in seamlessly with the space. Goosenecks are customizable and can have a lot more reach. Greenery is great for wrapping hooks and goosenecks and adds to the vibe of this design.
Hanging Decor at Upper Shirley Vineyards - Greenery & Lights
Simple but breathtaking. This snazzy-looking design is a 20 x 15 greenery and lighting piece. Upper Shirly Vineyards is an idea place for a design like this. The large supports in the space are great for hanging decor. Our team hung the structure and lighting for this wedding, and Monarch Flower Farm hung all the greenery.
Our rigging pros use ropes to raise the custom pipe structure into position and steel cables to secure it at height.
Hanging Lighting at Virginia House - Tent Twinkle Light Canopy
Why settle for a few uplights or a bit of bistro lighting when you can have your wedding reception under 10,000 sparkling twinkle lights? Twinkle lights are also called mini lights or Christmas lights; they are all the same thing. A twinkle lighting canopy is a significant nighttime effect that completely changes how a tent or room looks.
These types of designs have become more popular as they've become more achievable. Because LED lighting has become more attractive and affordable, large-scale lighting canopies now take way less power to accommodate.
The best thing about this design is that it will be in every reception photo. There are few better ways to transform a tent.
Hanging Decor From Trees - Spanish Moss Effect
No tent, no room, no support? Trees work, too! We call this look Spanish Moss Lighting, as it resembles Spanish Moss in the way that it hangs. This design is a little more complicated than it looks. Power cables must be run to points in the trees where the lights hang. The skill comes in managing these power cables without damaging the tree and keeping them from taking away from the look.
Lighting isn't the only thing that can be hung from trees. Most of our hanging decor options and chandelier options can be supported by trees.
Hanging Drapes from Everywhere - Wind-Inspired
Drapes are an essential part of many weddings and events. Having a solid vision for an inspired look like this is essential. Sheer white drapes are used along the sides, on top, front, and back. Two "Colette" Empire Chandeliers create dimension in the space.
Drape canopies are often hung from above in tents and inside to break up the space.
